Downtown Austin is one of those rare neighborhoods where you can eat at a James Beard-nominated restaurant, catch a live show at a legendary venue, and grab late-night tacos from a food truck, all within the same evening and all on foot. If you live in the Capitol District, this is your everyday reality.
Where to Eat
The dining scene within walking distance of Capitol Living is genuinely impressive. Here are some standouts across every price range:
- Juniper. Italian-inspired small plates and an excellent wine list on West 4th Street. Great for a date night or dinner with friends.
- Anthem. Right on Congress Avenue, Anthem serves upscale American food in a beautiful setting. Their brunch is one of the best downtown.
- Thai Kun. Chef Thai Changthong's spot near the Capitol delivers bold, authentic Thai street food that goes well beyond the usual pad Thai.
- Torchy's Tacos. The Austin original on Congress. Grab the Trailer Park or the Democrat for a quick, satisfying meal.
- Ramen Tatsu-Ya. Located a short walk south, this is consistently rated one of the best ramen spots in Texas.
Coffee Shops and Study Spots
Whether you need a morning espresso or a quiet place to work for the afternoon, downtown delivers:
- Houndstooth Coffee. A clean, modern space on Congress with some of the best specialty coffee in Austin.
- Merit Coffee. Light, airy, and always consistent. Multiple locations within walking distance.
- Medici Roasting. A UT-area staple that also has a Brazos Street location. Good vibes, good coffee, lots of seating.
- Cenote. If you are willing to walk or bike a bit east, Cenote on East Cesar Chavez is a beautiful garden cafe.
Bars and Nightlife
Downtown Austin is the nightlife capital of Texas, and you have three distinct scenes within easy reach:
6th Street
Just three blocks from Capitol Living, 6th Street is the main artery for bars and live music. Dirty 6th (between Congress and I-35) is the rowdier stretch with open-air bars and cheap drinks. West 6th is more upscale with cocktail lounges and rooftop bars. Both are walkable in minutes.
Rainey Street
About a 15-minute walk south, Rainey Street is a collection of converted bungalows turned into bars and restaurants. The vibe is more relaxed than 6th Street, with big patios, craft cocktails, and food trucks lining the sidewalks. Highlights include Banger's (sausages and beer), Half Step (craft cocktails), and Container Bar.
Congress Avenue
Congress Avenue is the backbone of downtown, running from the Capitol to the river. It is home to some of Austin's best cocktail bars, including the rooftop bar at The Driskill and the Stephen F. Austin Royal Sonesta. It is also where you will find the famous bat colony under the Congress Avenue Bridge from March through November.
Entertainment and Culture
Living downtown means living at the center of Austin's cultural scene:
- Paramount Theatre. A beautifully restored 1915 theater on Congress that hosts films, comedy, and live performances year-round.
- Blanton Museum of Art. On the UT campus, the Blanton houses one of the largest university art collections in the country.
- Bullock Texas State History Museum. Three floors of Texas history, an IMAX theater, and rotating exhibits. Just blocks from Capitol Living.
- ACL Live at the Moody Theater. One of Austin's premier live music venues. Catch touring acts and tapings of Austin City Limits.
- Lady Bird Lake. The hike and bike trail along Lady Bird Lake is a 10-minute walk south. Running, kayaking, and paddleboarding are all popular options.
Living in the Middle of It
The Capitol District puts you at the geographic center of all of this. Capitol Living sits at 1108 Nueces St, two blocks from the Texas State Capitol, with a Walk Score of 96 and a Bike Score of 91. You do not need a car to enjoy everything downtown has to offer.
